REQUIRED TRAINING CLASSES NEEDED FOR SCHOOL BUS ATTENDANTS/MONITORS*

* MUST BE 21 YEARS OF AGE

NYC BOARD OF EDUCATION SCHOOL BUS BASIC ATTENDANT TRAINING PROGRAM

Must be 21 years of age to attend. Upon completion of this training attendees will receive a “Certificate of School Bus Attendant Basic Training Program” from the Office of Pupil Transportation New York City Department of Education. Instruction is provided by a certified School Bus Instructor (SBDI). (Offered twice a month call for availability).

NEW YORK STATE CERTIFICATION BASIC MONITOR + ATTENDANT TRAINING PROGRAM

Every school bus monitor/attendant must complete this required course.  Upon completion of this training they will receive a “Certificate of Monitor and Attendant Training” from the University of the State of New York Education Department. Instruction is provided by a certified School Bus Instructor (SBDI).

PRE-SERVICE TRAINING

All school monitors and attendants must receive three (3) hours of Pre-Service Instruction which will include school bus safety practices, child management techniques, the proper way for assisting children and disabled students to safely enter and exit a school bus, and wheelchair training.  Instruction is provided by a certified School Bus Instructor (SBDI).

PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE TEST

This mandated test consists of climbing and descending the bus steps three (3) times within 30 seconds, starting in a seated position, quickly exit oneself from an emergency door in 20 seconds, and drag 125 pounds 30 feet in 30 seconds. Test is given by a certified School Bus Instructor (SBDI).

AMERICAN RED CROSS FIRST AID COURSE

Every school bus attendant must be certified as having successfully completed the American Red Cross Course in First Aid.  This course provides the knowledge and skills called for in situations where emergency first aid care is required. Course is taught by a certified American Red Cross Instructor.

AMERICAN RED CROSS ADULT + PEDIATRIC CPR COURSES

Every school bus attendant must be certified as having successfully completed a course in Adult & Pediatric CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). This training combines classroom as well as hands-on training. Course is taught by a certified American Red Cross Instructor.
